How To Create More Time In Your Life

Holistic Health Coach Katie Bressack As a health coach, one of the most common phrases I hear from people is how they wish they had more time. “If only I had more time, I would make it to yoga class, of course I would make a healthy dinner and I would never eat lunch at my desk.”

We can be pulled in so many different directions between our career, family and other things that we love to do that we are often running on empty and can’t seem to catch up.

The thing about time is that if we are not making our health a priority, time is always going to run away from us.

Today I am going to show you how to create more time in your life. You might gain an extra hour or maybe even up to five hours a day depending on what you decide to make a priority in your life.

First we must ask ourselves, what do I like to do?

While I was going through my career change, I knew that I was unhappy in my job but I didn’t know what I wanted to do next. So I left my phone at home and went to Tompkins Square park with a notebook and a pen and just wrote down everything I enjoyed doing.

I realized through this practice that I hadn’t been writing or doing anything for pleasure. I was all about work and at the end of the day I was feeling empty and my pleasure came from eating ice cream and complaining to my friends about my job.

The next week I signed up for a writing class and started exploring my creative side again. I started feeling inspired again, and was ready to move my body! I had so much energy to burn that I started a yoga practice that I had been wanting to try for years.

So let’s check in with ourselves and see what we actually enjoy doing. Pretend that your phone, TV and computer won’t work and take out a pen and paper and jot everything down.

Look at your list, what things do you do at least once a week? Put a star next to those things. If you want to do them more than once a week  put a heart next to it. Now, what things did you write down that you never seem to have enough time to do but really enjoying doing? Put a heart next to them.

When we are doing things that we enjoy our body feels loved and nourished. When we feel good about ourselves we create space in our life to make choices for our health. We take time to get healthy food for our home, to move our bodies and to not criticize our bodies.

Here is how to create more time in your life!

Leave Your Computer At Work

  • Yes, I know this is scary but leave your computer at work. This is very important on Fridays so that you don’t take it home and work over the weekend and it doesn’t go on vacation with you. Your computer is not your friend or lover so make the choice to leave it at work so that it doesn’t interfere with your relationships.

You can save up to five hours a day or more of time just by leaving your computer at work every night!

Only Check Email Twice A Day

  • If you are in the habit of sitting in front of your computer all day just reading and responding to emails, how much are you actually getting done? When we want to create more time in our life we must work smart not hard. Email is one of the biggest reasons we stay at work late. Create a system that works for you. I like to read an email once, respond and then file it away. I also try to only check emails twice a day.

When I do this I create at least three hours of time a day. This one is hard for me so it might take time for you as well to implement it!

Technology Detox

  1. Hide your phone! Seriously once you are home and settled in turn your phone on airplane mode or if you need to have someone hide it for you, please do.

If you could stay away from your phone and other devices you could gain at least three hours a night to read, write or do whatever you enjoy doing.

Delete Social Media Off Your Phone

  • I have a very love/hate relationship with social media. I love being connected but if I’m having an off day it just makes me feel worse about myself… like I’m not doing enough as a business owner, as a woman or friend. Social media takes up so much space in your mind that you could free up and just feel better about life.

Taking this off your phone can create at least three hours of time a day

Now with all of this new time in your life, what would you LOVE to do? Here are some activities that my clients have added to their life with their extra time.

  • Hiking
  • Biking
  • Creating photo albums
  • Relaxing at the beach
  • Reading for pleasure
  • Spending quality time with family and friends
  • Calling a friend you have been thinking about
  • Making dinner
  • Meal prepping for the week
  • Food shopping
  • Exploring a farmer’s market
  • Taking baths
  • Getting massages
  • Getting mani/pedis
  • Sleeping

So how much time have you saved in your life to do the things you love? Please share with us below!
