Stress Relief Foods

iphone eatingHave you noticed that no matter how hard you try to take a break from work you seem to be checking work emails and voicemails even when you are not in the office.

It kind of seems almost impossible to not have contact with work when you are on vacation or even at night and on the weekends.

When our minds our on constant call we tend to not breathe right, we tend to overeat and feel overwhelmed and frazzled. I really encourage you to try a technology detox this summer on the weekends and most importantly on your vacation.

I was home for a little vaca and was able to avoid email for a few days which really helped turn my creative brain on.

If unplugging is not an option, we can decrease our stress levels in our body by giving it the essential nutrients needed to relax our mind and body while giving us energy and brain fuel.

You will feel less stressed, more energized and calm with these top stress relief  foods!

  • Avocados – I eat at least 2 avocados a day. They are full of healthy fats keeping my brain alert plus they are loaded with potassium, a vital mineral for keeping blood pressure low.

Try my “Ice Cream” Recipe with Avocado!

  •  Real Chocolate – Who would ever say no to eating more chocolate! Cacao has tons of iron and magnesium in it which helps balance our body out and reduces anxiety.

Make my raw chocolate macaroons for a quilt-less chocolate treat!

  • Walnuts (or any nut really) Stress runs you down, which leaves you open to sickness. Almonds, pistachios and walnuts can boost your immune system with vitamins and zinc. Omega-3s also help the body maintain a lower blood pressure during stressful situations.

One of my favorite snacks are walnuts & raisins

  • Strawberries! They are high in magnesium and can help reduce anxiety and irritability.

Add strawberries to your morning green smoothie or as a light afternoon snack.

  • Sweet Potatoes –  They satisfy the urge you get for carbohydrates and sweets when you are under a great deal of stress. Sweet Potatoes are also packed full of beta-carotene and other vitamins, and the fiber helps your body to process the carbohydrates in a slow and steady manner

I love my Sweet Potato Fries recipe!

  • Dark Leafy Greens – Magnesium in dark leafy veggies helps balance the body’s stress hormone, cortisol. I try to have greens at every meal. I have also noticed that when I feel a little more stressed  my body actually craves greens!
  • Carrots & Other Crunchy Veggies – Munching on crunchy foods helps beat stress, trust me it works!  It Try it sometime.

This week try adding some of these foods into your diet and see how your body feels. Keep a food journal so you can write down how you are feeling after you eat some of these stress relief foods. This way you know what your body likes the best so you can add them into your life when you are feeling busy.
