Food And Your Mood

veggies_2When I was in my twenties living in New York City, I was a hot mess at times.

Picture this, a coughing sneezing woman in sneakers running back and forth to the printer. Co-workers of mine to this day remember me running around the office.

I was an overachiever aiming to become a top executive in my field but I was moody, cranky and unfullfilled.

I woke up early to exercise only to be exhausted by 10 a.m., my diet consisted of cheese, cereal, sugar-free maple syrup, whole wheat bread, fat-free crackers, salads and fish.

See I thought moving my body and eating healthy was the key to my success at work.  I was almost right, I knew in my heart and soul that I needed to eat healthy to feel energetic and productive so I ate all of the “healthy” things.

Little did I know that by eating fat-free crackers and staying away from fats like avocados was making me cranky. I had no idea that the cheese I was addicted to was making me exhausted and bloated.

When I made small changes to my diet, I saw major gains in my career, my body and in my personal life.

Today I am sharing how you can improve your mood, so that you can truly thrive in your body

How Are You Feeling?

Before we start making changes to your diet, check in with you and see how you are feeling. Do you forget your keys or put your keys somewhere only to forget where they are a few minutes later. Are you snapping at your loved ones? Do you just feel exhausted no matter what you do.

If you are forgetting things, chances are you are not eating enough healthy fats like avocados, coconut oils and salmon. If you are snapping at your loved ones, you are probably stressed and eating to much sugar. If you are exhausted it could mean that your hormones are not balanced and your adrenal glands are working harder than they should be.

In order to thrive in our bodies we must discover the root cause of what is holding us back from feeling the best that we can every day. Once you know what your mood is, we can add the right things into your body in order to thrive.

Kitchen Cabinet Cleanse

Take a few moments to look at what you have in your fridge and in your cabinets. Chances are you might find fat-free salad dressings, sugar-free maple syrup and chips.

When we are eating processed foods that contain artificial flavors, sugars and fillers like wheat, soy, corn, and dairy we are making our bodies work harder.

See as women our bodies do not handle toxins very well and over time these toxins build in our body making us exhausted, cranky and moody.

These toxins throw our hormones off which leads to poor body image, lack of desire for sex and hating our jobs.

I encourage you eat as clean as possible. The more greens, whole grains like quinoa, and real foods that you eat the better the relationships you will have, the less exhausted you will feel and the more fulfilled you will be in your career.

Stable Mood = Stable Energy

As women when we get busy the first thing we forget about is us, we forget to eat, we forget to exercise and we even forget to breathe.

In order to thrive in our bodies, we must remember how important we are. We can not take care of our families, our career and our relationships when we are a hot mess.

Our bodies need to move every day, if you are at work all day ask for a stand-up desk or go for quick walks throughout the day.

Eat three meals a day and if you are starving in between meals, eat more food. We are usually not eating enough food. (I know, total opposite of what you thought!)

Please don’t forget to take deep breaths throughout the day to keep your body calm and your mind alert.

See when I was running around eating cheese, ice cream and salads I was exhausted, tired and cranky and so were my relationships, my career and my mood.

By taking out what was causing me to feel like crap, I was able to discover what was holding me back from becoming who I truly wanted to me.

When I started feeling better I had more energy and my mood improved. Plus I was promoted at work, I became a yoga teacher and I went back to school to become a women’s health coach.

The first step to thriving in your body is making sure that you are taking care of you. I encourage to discover the root cause of what is making you feel like crap, check your hormones and truly make a commitment to your health. Trust me you will feel like a brand new woman.

How do you feel when you eat clean? Do you notice a difference in your mood? Please share with us below so we can all support each other.
