This Sunday, August 25th at 3 p.m. I will be speaking at the Green Yogi in Manhattan Beach about a subject near and dear to my heart, dieting.
The word diet by definition means “the kind of food that a person, animal or community habitually eats” so basically the foods we need in order to survive and feel nourished.
However to most people the word diet means how to lose weight by restricting our bodies of foods that we enjoy. But by doing this, we truly take away all of the joy, pleasure and fun out of eating and living.
Many of my clients come to me after they have tried every diet in an attempt to lose weight. It seems like everyone is striving to look a certain way so they can feel happier in their lives. We often think, if I could lose a few more pounds than I could ask for that promotion at work. If only I could lose a few more pounds then I would feel comfortable in a bathing suit again.
Having body confidence is very important but when we dig deep into the heart of why we are dieting it is not a number that defines the way we feel about our bodies.
This feeling comes from deep inside of us, a feeling that we might be to busy to tap into because when we are so focused on a number we are taking away the fun and joy in our life. Instead our weight and our diet becomes an obsession and we are left feeling depressed, cranky and bored.
I have never owned a scale but just like you I have struggled with my appearance over the years. There is a lot of pressure on women to look and feel a certain way. But I truly believe the way that we feel about ourselves comes from deep inside and not on the physical level.
If we could all look inward to figure out what brings us joy, what makes our heart smile, what makes us feel alive and vibrant than we could stop dieting and truly start living. This is what I did in my late twenties that created the biggest shift about my body and my life.
I know that this might not be easy but I encourage you to stop dieting. Please throw away the scale in your house, numbers don’t mean anything.
I have met many people who have lose those extra pounds but still didn’t feel happy. I have supported women to create a healthier lifestyle who have lose weight without even trying because they were truly connected to their inner power and creating shifts about the way they thought about themselves and their bodies.
Let’s get back into feeling. How would we feel if we ate foods that truly helped our bodies thrive like greens, veggies & fresh fruit. What if we ate to feel nourished instead of counting calories. What if we took a few moments every morning to tell ourselves that we love us, that we love our legs, our belly, our eyes and our butt!
I truly believe that if we spend more time focusing on what we love about ourselves we wouldn’t have to worry about the amount of calories or fat our next meal has.
