Healthy Travel Essentials

IMG_3559Last week I shared with you how I used to be sick all of the time, seriously! I know it might be hard for you to believe but I caught every single cold, flu, you name it, I had it. Traveling for work didn’t help keep me healthy either, between the plane and train rides and not sleeping in my own bed I was running on empty a lot of the time.

While traveling I was doing a lot of entertaining with clients and I would always get a Vitamin Water at the local corner store after a night out. I really thought that the Vitamins in this water were going to help me recover, but I couldn’t have been more wrong. There is so much sugar in Vitamin Water, Emergen-C and Gatorade, almost 20 grams of sugar to be exact! Now that I know how much sugar actually depresses the immune system, I can see why I never actually felt better after drinking these drinks or using the Emergen-C.

I really wish I had known then what I know now about the must haves for healthy travel. I know it would have made a huge difference in my energy levels and not getting sick so often. Today I am sharing with you how I prepare my body for travel and what I bring with me so I can try and stay as healthy as possible.

Prep Your Body For Travel

About a week before you are leaving for your trip, start preparing your body for your upcoming travel. Really look at what you are eating and add in more greens and veggies, drink plenty of water and sleep at least eight hours a night. In addition to all of those things (which I mention almost every blog post :)) are holistic immune boosters. I always take a daily vitamin, and to make sure I don’t forget the week before my trip I add a calendar notification that pops up on my phone along with one for my daily probiotic. If I am going to travel internationally I always up the dosage. Especially since I am going to India, I want to make sure my gut is healthy so I can avoid getting sick. I also have a cup of my bone broth every day before I leave. If I’m not feeling the best this week I also might take Counter Attack, which has an additional Vitamin C and Iron along with some some herbs to support my immune system.

The Real “Emergen-C”

A friend of mine introduced this to me before I left on my honeymoon and I honestly believe it was one of the many reasons I felt so good when I landed in Australia after a 16 hour flight. Ultima is the healthy version of Emergen-C. Unlike Emergen-C which has tons of added sugars, Ultima uses Stevia which is just a sweet herb. I put this packet into my water bottle and drank it on my flight to and from Australia.

My Essential Oils

I’m a little obsessed with my Young Living Thieves Oil. During my flight to Australia I put it on my wrists and on my scarf that I wrapped around my neck. Thieves Oil helps to support my immune system. I also use my Young Living Lemon Oil in my water to help with immunity and I keep my Young Living Peppermint Oil on hand to rub on my tummy. I have a very sensitive stomach so I rub a little bit of this peppermint oil my belly when my stomach is starting to feel a little uneasy. If you’d like to learn more about these essential oils, email me today!

What Else I Pack

I also bring my sleep mask, ginger tea packets, elderberry zinc lozenges, ear plugs and a comfy neck pillow, (especially for flights home from the west coast to the east coast.) Now I know that you might be thinking “Oh my goodness Katie that is a lot to bring or remember.” I’m not saying that you need to try all of these things, this is just what I have found works the best for me especially when I’m traveling for longer periods of time. I suggest next time you are about to travel to try a few of these tips and see what works the best for you and your body.
