What Your Skin Says About Your Health

(Hint it’s all about your hormones)

Your skin speaks the truth, whatever is going on in the inside will be reflected on the outside. Your skin says so much about your health and hormones and what area of your diet might need a little extra attention.

Our body speaks to us through cravings and tells us exactly what we need to eat to support ourselves AND it also speaks to us through breakouts to show us what part of our body we need to nourish more with specific foods. According to Chinese Medicine every time acne appears on different parts of our body it represents a health issue in a specific part of our body.

All acne is hormonal, but some is more closely linked to our hormonal cycle and can reveal key imbalances we might be experiencing. Whether or not you are breaking out constantly or just that time of the month, it can show us exactly where your hormonal imbalance lies.

During our twenties, breakouts are usually directly related to our unhealthy food choices which can cause havoc on our delicate hormonal balance. In our thirties, our breakouts occur more often as our bodies are experiencing the ups and downs of the pregnancy hormonal rollercoaster, even if you are not having children your body is still going through that cycle and career stress. When you get into your forties it’s mostly because the estrogen in your body starts to decline.

It’s not hopeless! Just because your body is experiencing these hormonal changes doesn’t mean you will be breaking out for the rest of your life. If we pay attention to where we are breaking out we can actually change our diet to support our hormones and stop the breakouts from occurring.

One woman who joined my group program had been struggling with her skin for years and wanted to figure out the root cause of her breakouts.

“Before starting the bootcamp, I thought I had a strong working knowledge of hormones and my diet. But I decided to try it because I could not get rid of regular hormonal acne breakouts. I thought I had tried everything, read every blog post about peri-oral dermatitis, and had succumbed to regular use of antibiotics for it. With Katie’s support, I was able to dig deeper than any doctor or practitioner ever had. I no longer have the breakouts and haven’t taken any medication since the third week of the bootcamp! My skin is flawless! I would recommend this program for anyone looking for general knowledge, as well as those who need a supportive detective to help with hormone challenges. ~ Carolyn Prien

Below I’m sharing with you a few tips on where you might be experiencing the hormonal breakouts, why this might be happening and a quick health tip to help balance the hormones so your skin can glow again!

Upper Forehead = Digestive System and Bladder. This might mean that your body is having a hard time digesting foods or you are eating foods that your body and hormones don’t love like gluten and dairy.

  • Healthy Tip: Drink more water to help flush toxins out of your body and start noticing how much sugar and unhealthy foods you might be eating and have way less. Add some lemons to your water and eat tons of greens.

Lower Forehead = Heart. When you are burning the candle at both ends in your career your entire body feels more stressed and this can affect your heart. It can also feel stressed if you are inactive and are eating an unhealthy diet.

  • Healthy Tip: Add in deep breathing throughout the day, move your body and don’t say YES when you really want to say NO. Reduce stress in your life in any way possible.

Ears = Kidneys. If you are not drinking enough water you might start to notice pimples on your ears! This can also be caused by eating to many salty foods and caffeine.

  • Healthy Tip: Again water is the best way to help support your body especially your kidneys. You may also notice that when you are dehydrated the bags under your eyes get puffy, drinking more water can help reduce the puffiness.

Eyes & between the Eyebrows = Liver. Any breakouts and oily skin between the eyebrows can indicate that your liver may have been overworking and needs a cleansing.

  • Healthy Tip: You must eliminate fatty, sugary, greasy foods plus alcohol and diary. Try adding in foods to help cleanse your liver like dark greens, lemons, limes, green juices and garlic.

Upper Cheeks = Lungs and Respiratory System. Stresses to the lungs like smoking and pollution can cause flare ups in the upper cheeks.

  • Healthy Tip: Get a air filtration system in your house and avoid places where there is a lot of smoke!

Lower Cheeks = Gum or Teeth Problems. Are you flossing your teeth every day, brushing your teeth and going to the dentist at least once a year? If you have any sort of mouth issues it will show up on your lower cheeks.

  • Healthy Tip: Stay away from sodas and candies, especially the ones with artificial flavors and colors and get a visit with your dentist on the calendar!

Sides of the Chin = Hormones. It’s a sign of hormonal imbalance, often caused by our monthly period.

  • Healthy Tip: Eat and move for your cycle! Start a food journal and write down everything you are eating and let’s see if we can find a relationship to what you might be eating and how it’s effecting your hormones.

Center of the Chin = Small Intestines and Stomach. This is usually because of food allergies and sensitivities that we might not even be aware we have.

  • Healthy Tip: Eat more fruits and veggies and start that food journal. Let’s see how food really affects the way your body is feeling.

Chest and Neck= STRESS

  • Healthy Tip: I know so many of our breakouts are from stress but this one in particular is all stress. So what is really causing you to react in a way that is unhealthy to your body? Add some walks, stretching and laughter into your day more.

As you can see most of these hormonal imbalances are caused by an unhealthy diet full of sugar, too much dairy and processed foods. When we put these foods into our body our digestive system has to work overtime to support our body.

The best thing you can do for your skin right now is start a food journal and actually start noticing what you are eating and what is causing the breakouts, plus learn how to eat and move for your cycle to help create more hormonal balance in your body.

You can also start taking a probiotic (my favorite are from life equals, you can use code KBR50 for your first order.) You can also start taking a digestive enzyme before your biggest meal which should be lunch to help the body break down food easier and support the digestive system more. I like the Rainbow Light brand.

And as always eat more greens, drink more water, eat more healthy fats like avocados and walnuts and get plenty of beauty sleep! Plus try to avoid gluten and dairy which is in almost everything so reading labels is a must. This is key to creating clearer skin and more hormonal balance in our body. You will be grateful for making this change when next month you don’t breakout right before your period.

    Hi Katie,

I have an 11 yr old daughter who broke out on small acne two months ago. It’s al over her forehead (upper mostly) eyebrows and cheeks. They are small bumps and some red ones (she has a bad habit of touching them).

I noticed it coincided with a carb increase.

Any suggestions? Can we help. It’s horrible to watch her go through it at such a tender age. I never suffered with it but my husband did.

Do you think there is a link between carbs and acne as she doesn’t each much sugar.

    Many thanks

      Hi Zarn,

There is a lot of sugar in carbs, especially white processed carbs so that could totally be one of the reasons she is experiencing some breakouts. Hope this helps and if you have any questions you can email me anytime katie@katiebressack.comReplyCancel

What about breakouts on the nose?ReplyCancel

    • katieb

Hi! Try adding in some more healthy fats, that can be helpful for breakouts on your nose. Try and have less spicy foods and meats for a little bit to see if that can also help!ReplyCancel
