Whenever I tell someone that I am a vegetarian, I usually get the question – where do you get your protein from?
I eat a 95% plant based diet with fish a few times a month. I have plenty of energy and when I do feel my energy is lacking that is when Ieat or drink more greens.
I was a vegetarian from the 4th grade until my sophomore year in college, I still remember the first time I had meat again. I was in London right after New Year’s with a few of my girl friends and I was craving chicken. I listened to my body and had a chicken sandwich. I then started eating chicken and turkey until about six months ago. I had noticed that I wasn’t feeling good after eating chicken so I decided to go back to my veggie roots 🙂
I gave up meat when I was 10 years old not because of animal rights but I had always disliked the taste and texture of meat. I’m sure my parents know this so I don’t think I’m giving away a childhood secret… but when I was younger I would pretend to eat meat and then toss it into a napkin and throw it under the table. I’m sure my dog was very happy about this. I was listening to my body and what it liked to eat and not eat, something I plan on teaching to my children someday.
I encourage each and every one of you to discover which foods your body enjoys and needs. Think about what gives you energy, helps you focus and makes you feel satisfied and happy.
Here are my favorite sources of plant based protein
1. Quinoa. There are 11 grams of protein in just 1 cup of Quinoa
2. Beans
3. Nuts – Peanuts, Almonds, Cashews, Walnuts. They are all good for you
4. Dark Leafy Green Veggies – Kale, Spinach, Swiss Chard. The darker the green the better
5. Hemp Seeds
6. Bee Pollen
7. Maca
8. Blue Green Algae
9. Spirulina/Chlorella
Katie BÂ Tip: If you are buying beans in a can look for BPA free cans. The lining of cans has been linked to cancer. Unless they say BPA free on the can they have BPA in them. I like Eden Foods since all of their cans are BPA free. Just make sure you still wash the beans with water to eliminate any sodium.
