How To Stay Healthy At Work

Living life with a busy schedule can be quite difficult. It almost seems impossible to find the time to take care of your health. It can be daunting to prioritize healthy eating, movement and self care, even though you know when you make your health a priority you will be more focused and productive at work.

As an employer, it is important to be aware that these are issues that your employees are dealing with. However, these issue also present an opportunity to provide your employees with nutrition education that support them in losing weight and feeling good. This not only benefits the employee, but the company as well!  According to Harvard Business, every dollar invested in Corporate Wellness Programs yields $6 in healthcare savings. Healthier workers can also increase productivity and decrease absenteeism.

For one of our Corporate Wellness classes, we taught 10 ways to achieve healthy weight loss and today I will share with you three ways you can be healthy at work.

Corporate Wellness Food DemoEat a High Protein Breakfast
Breakfast can help us feel satiated for longer and stave off cravings; but this comes with eating a high protein breakfast rather than a breakfast high in sugars and simple carbohydrates. Protein can help boost your metabolism by 80-100 calories per day and helps reduce sugar cravings. Try and incorporate a quality protein-based breakfast tomorrow morning with our overnight oats recipe. During our corporate wellness lunch and learn we did a food demo and showed the employees how to make quick and easy overnight oats. Everyone was given a company branded mason jar and was able to pick different toppings, cashews, sunflower seeds, pumpkin seeds, cacao nibs, shredded coconut, raisins or cranberries. You can check out the recipe here. The best part of having a food demo during a lunch and learn is to show employees how little time it takes to prepare healthy meals and snacks.

 

 

 

Sleep Is Essential 
Sometimes we can miss out on the importance of sleep but it is, in fact, so vital to our health. The recommended amount of sleep per night is between 7-8 hours. In our recent corporate wellness workshop I asked the group how many hours they sleep each night, and over 90% of them receive less than 7 hours of sleep per night! To help you sleep better and earlier, form a nighttime routine and avoid screens that emit a blue light. Your phone is not your friend when it’s time to sleep. Check out my favorite yoga pose, legs up the wall, to help you unwind before going to sleep. I also encourage everyone to try magnesium, not only is it beneficial to sleep but it also helps your body combat stress. 

 

Meal Prep
Incorporating meal prepping into your routine is beneficial for your health. Prepping your meals ahead of time for the week can save you time, energy and money. Planning ahead allows you to choose healthier foods instead of choosing to eat out when hunger hits. This routine can decrease the sugars you eat, give you more consistent energy, and improve your overall health. Try pre-portioning meals this weekend for your upcoming week and feel the benefits of meal prepping.
